Collaboration Dr Tony Ward and community design students, University of Auckland (1998)
Project team Maurits Kelderman, Mark Suddens
Budget $1 850 000
Completion 2006–2008
Description

The first two stages of our involvement in the redevelopment of Mangatangi Marae were the whareiti, completed in 2006, and the wharekai, Kirihaehae, completed in 2008.

The ablutions include 11 showers and 10 toilets, as well as accessible facilities and a laundry

The build of the whareaki was in two stages, to accommodate the annual poukai. The kitchen was built first, followed by the main wharekai space with seating for over 350 diners. The wharekai was carefully designed so as not to overshadow the existing wharenui or its future replacement.
