We have undertaken many projects with Te Aroha Pā over the years, with a staged redevelopment of the marae buildings and infrastructure. The wharenui refurbishment, completed in 2018, included reroofing, insulation, new electrical fitout, interior linings and sprinklers, to form an interior that respected the original mahi by the whānau. Also completed in 2018 was a new whareiti with eight showers and nine toilets, with accessible facilities, a mattress room and a kaumātua room. The latter provides a quiet space for pakeke to withdraw and rest from the demands of whaikōrero. In 2018, the former kōhanga reo buiding was refurbished to create a whareāwhina, with updated toilet and accessible facilities, and a new compact commerical kitchen. It functioned as an interim wharekai, and continues to service smaller rōpū staying on the marae. In 2025, a new modern wharekai, Ngā Puna Wai, was completed. With seating for 250 diners, it is suitable for all manner of hui, including mau rākau and kapa haka. Utilizing passive design principles, including thermal mass, natural light and ventilation, the building is high insulated, and its 134 solar panels power the marae. |
