The project involved the rebuild of both the wharenui and wharekai facilities. With a desire from whānau to increase dining capacity to 350 and enlarge the wharenui by one-third, some creative responses were necessary, given the tight site constraints. The new wharenui utilizes natural light and ventilation to complement highly insulated spaces. A new mattress room was added, along with an accessible shower and toilet, and an indoor link to the existing whareiti facilities. The original carvings were reinstated both internally and externally to fit the new configuration. The new large and spacious wharekai complex provides for a multitude of hui, and includes a commercial kitchen, a self-contained Kīngitanga facility, and storage for tables and chairs. The wharekai seamlessly connects to other pars of the marae, including Piko te Ora, a multipurpose building that was refitted in 2016. |
